The brave little tailor has a length of fabric that totals 90 yards. Every day, he cuts off an 18 yard length. If he started on a Monday, on which day did he make the last cut?
(character from Brothers' Grimm "The Brave Little Tailor")
This is a false direct proportionality problem. One has to notice that though:
this number represents the total number of smaller pieces, not the number of cuts that must be made.
To cut an object in 5 pieces only 4 cuts must be made!
Thus, the tailor makes the last cut on the 4th day,a Thursday if we count from Monday on.
