Jerome, Harris and George have managed to open a can of pineapple. After much deliberation they have decided to split the contents in portions that are in the same ratio as 0.5:0.7:0.8, respectively. If the average portion is 3.58 oz, what size portion in oz. did Jerome receive?

(characters from Jerome K. Jerome - "Three Men in a Boat")

If the average portion was 3.58 oz and there are three portions, then the total contents of the can amounts to:

equation

This amount is split in portions that are proportional to the numbers 0.5:0.7:0.8 or, just as well 5:7:8. There is a total of 20 equal parts of which Jerome receives 5, Harris receives 7 and George gets 8.

Therefore, the size of each part is:

equation

and Jerome gets:
