On April 12, 1961, the Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin has flown around the Earth in the Vostok module. On July 20, 1969, the spaceship Apollo 11 carried the American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin to the Moon where they performed the first human moon walk. How many years, months and days separated the two space flights?

(Note: We consider a standard month to have 30 days)

(problem by N.Teodorescu)

On April 12, 1961 there are 18 days left to the end of the month. From May 1st 1961 to April 30 1969 there are 8 years. From May 1st 1969 to July 20, there are 2 months and 20 days. The total number of loose days is 38. We can convert this number of days into 1 month and 8 days. We now have 8 years, 3 months and 8 days.
